The past month has certainly been busy! I’ve been participating in several Groupreads, and I’m looking forward to continuing the fun. I hosted my first Author Interview, which was an exciting milestone for me. I’m even making satisfactory progress on my Reading Challenges for the year, and I’m especially enjoying seeing what everyone’s chosen for Once Upon a Time.
I made a few tiny changes to the formatting of my blog, especially the “Currently Reading” widget. Photobucket decided to update and make my life more difficult, so I decided to use the built-in Goodreads widget. Yes, this means that I’m going to have to stop being a slacker and start updating Goodreads more than once a month.
Over the next month or so, I’m planning on reading more fantasy for the Once Upon a Time challenge, as well as reading more sci-fi. Remember a few months ago when I asked everyone for sci-fi recommendations because I hadn’t read any before? Well, you created a monster. I’m now addicted to sci-fi. I’m planning on reading as much of it as I can.
I haven’t gone on a book-buying binge yet this month, but I do have a couple new books:
“The City & the City” by China Mieville – I won this book as a part of the Award Winning Books challenge. It won a Hugo, among other awards.
“Through Wolf’s Eyes” by Jane Lindskold – This book looks like “Julie of the Wolves” meets epic fantasy. I’m intrigued.
I also downloaded a few Kindle books (all of which were free) for my commuting pleasure:
“Star Born” by Andre Norton – Norton’s name keeps popping up when I read about sci-fi, and this one was free.
“The Gods of Mars” by Edgar Rice Burroughs – I enjoyed the first book in the series, and I can’t wait to see John Carter reunite with Dejah Thoris!
“The Hub: Dangerous Territory” by James H. Schmitz – Angie left a comment recommending this to me because Schmitz’s writing features strong female characters. It led me to discover the Baen Free Library, which is an amazing little corner of the web.
Has anyone read any of the books I mentioned? If so, how are they?

Just a suggestion–get a hold of Warlord of Mars before you start Gods of Mars. You’re going to want it! They’re not that long, and you could easily read them right in a row… 😉

The plot seems like a more grown-up version of a couple books that I read as a child. I’m very curious about it. 🙂
I haven’t read any of those but I did read James H. Schmitz’s Legacy, which was a fun, yet odd read.

I read City and the City and it’s interesting–and a bit confusing, at times.
It seems like it will be. I’ve been hearing a lot about China Mieville, so it’ll be nice to see what the hype is about. 🙂
I need something to read for my commuting pleasure. Could you please recommend a few fantasy books that are not too cheesy and without complex magic system? Something along the lines of The warded man or The name of the wind?
Hmm… I haven’t read either of those. If you don’t mind a book with some creative cursing in it, you might like “The Lies of Locke Lamora” by Scott Lynch. It’s a fun read about a thief who scams the nobility.
